What will my child’s First Visit be like?

First VisitNormally on the first visit, a complete examination for the teeth and all structures of the mouth is made and X-rays are taken for ages 4 and older (or if emergency treatment is needed.) A discussion with the parent will follow after the examination period. If your child is younger than three years old, we invite you to stay with your child and they can sit on your lap during the exam and watch our TVs. During future appointments, we suggest that you allow your child to accompany our staff through the dental experience. We can usually establish a closer rapport with your child when you are not present. Our purpose is to gain your child's confidence and overcome apprehension. Our doctors and staff are experienced in helping children overcome anxiety. Separation anxiety is not uncommon in children, so please try not to be concerned if your child exhibits some negative behavior as crying is a normal reaction to anything new and strange. Studies and experience have shown that most children over the age of 3 react more positively when permitted to experience the dental visit on their own and in an open environment designed for children. Kindness is the greatest contribution for overcoming fear and it will be our main objective to eliminate all dental fears and give your child confidence in their dentist and staff. We believe you will be very pleased with your child’s first visit. During your first visit we will:

  • Check For Cavities
  • Demonstrate Proper Brushing & Flossing Techniques
  • Evaluate The Growth and Development of your Child's Teeth
  • Check For Gum Disease & Other Abnormalities
  • Make Recommendations On How To Prevent Dental Problems

A few tips for making your child’s appointment and future appointments a positive experience:

  • In discussing dentistry with your child, please do not use the words “needle,” “drill,” "hurt," “shot” or any other word that might have an unpleasant meaning. Pediatric dental offices make a practice of using words that convey the same message, but are pleasant and non-frightening to the child. Every possible effort will be made to make the visit psychologically pleasant.
  • Please refrain from saying the phrase "the doctor will not hurt you” as this only suggests the possibility that it will hurt. We will treat your child as we do our very own when rendering dental services for them. The important thing is to perform dentistry thoroughly and carefully.
  • Dental appointments are an excused absence. Appropriate excuse forms are available.

Let us assure you that our office staff will do everything possible to make your child a healthy and knowledgeable dental patient. As a result, he or she may be rewarded with excellent dental health for many years to come. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to bring them to our attention.

New patients will need to complete our new patient forms prior to being seen. For your convenience, we have included a link to these forms below. To expedite your visit, please print the forms, complete them and bring them with you for your child’s first appointment.
